1) Far enough to see the base(s) you need to cover and the spot where the ball is coming from and to be out of the way of runners, fielders and throws.
What was your partner saying and what were you doing would help us explain better.
2) BU has trail runner, PU has lead runner at 3rd and home. With runners on 2nd(R2) and 3rd (R1) and a BR; if the first play is home, it is PU and you have next. If the first play is 3rd, PU has it and you have R2 and BR.
3) Yes.
