I know you probably didn't mean it this way, but you mentioned that this involved Team A's "best player". Just a reminder that we shouldn't let anything having to do with the player's perceived value to the team play into our decision making process. There is no doubt there is a perception by coaches, players and fans that the "best" players should receive some kind of special consideration and that their value to their team should play some part in how they are treated. Simply put - this is wrong. Players are players - period. They all are to be treated equally.
Of course the NBA has different rules on this subject.
