First, I'm from the old school and don't discuss money. My wife was curious as to the remuneration (go figure) and did some snooping and found in Texas the range is $20-$25 for Fresh & JV and Varsity anywhere from $28+gate to $60/game (2-man) and $40/game (3-man) - NOTE: that is from the chapter sites that would post the information.
Personally, I do it because I thoroughly enjoy it (in particular) and working with kids/young adults in general (besides, the excercise won't kill me). I also contribute several hundred hours a year working as a BSA leader and have paid a couple thousand dollars over the last few years for training, equipment, etc. (not including $2,000 for Nat'l Jamboree) to VOLUNTEER. I honestly think I would officiate for free (practically there now). I only track income and expenses so I don't get nailed on April 15.
But then, I only aspire to go as high as HS varisty.
