Why is that accusation any different than other accusations thrown at officials?

The difference, I think, is that the author is not making any
accusation at all against the officials based on classism or on where they live. The author is merely suggesting that if the coach had said, "They had more financial resources because of their economic status and that allowed them to prepare better than we did", then nobody would've batted an eye. Because that's probably true. It's not necessarily right, but it's true. The
accusation of racism, however, is completely different and is probably NOT true, merely inflammatory.
The author is not suggesting that the officials were biased against this non-Catholic team. Maybe that's where some misunderstanding developed. JMO
