I was at a D-1 game yesterday and noticed the first base umpire (3-man crew) using a mechanic I had not seen before. With R2 only, he was standing in the dirt portion of the infield, directly in the baseline between 1B and 2B. Is this part of general 3-man mechanics, or is this something exclusive to NCAA?
