To me it seems that the "old school" thinking
about having to wear a hat comes from the
days when some umpires would not wear a hat with
a traditional mask (horrible for sure).
I still wear an old style metal frame with vinyl pads
and a Yeager style attached throat protector--
but think the hockey style mask looks fine w/o a hat.
