Jeez - I didn't mean to stir up a hornet nest here - just was looking for a resolution to a play that several impartial spectators (all coaches, parents as well as fans, by the way) discussed in great detail and could not resolve. I think somewhere in this thread I found that answer and I thank you (TBBlue, I believe). And the answer to the question of whether or not the defense appealed is - no - they did not. I spoke to an official Ohio High School umpire at our game last night and explained the situation to him. He (unlike some in this forum) was willing to discuss the situation and was hard-pressed to come up with the right call.
And I appreciate those who defended my post, since it was not mean-spirited nor whining. My suggestion to the forum leaders is, if you want to eliminate fans/parents/players/coaches from posting, do what other forums do - add a "sticky" to the forum, which will outline the rules of the forum. I found this particular forum by searching Google and it took me directly to the baseball forum, not into the officiating.com home page. So I had no idea that this is meant for "officials only". Furthermore, I don't know who answers questions on eteamz - are they people who actually know the rulebook, or just other coaches/fans, etc... that think they know the rules. I felt that your forum was a good place to ask the true experts. Sorry if it bothers some.
Sometimes during games I've played in/coached/watched, some officials act as as though they are "above" the game, instead of just an equal, important part of it. I can tell from the responses in this thread that there is a little of both here as well. Apologies to those who accepted my post for what it is - an honest question from an intelligent fan.
