First day umpiring, many years ago. Went to get my equipment that very day. No one (neither my trainer, nor the store) mentioned the neck-protector. Last batter of my only game at the plate fouls one straight back into my neck. Hit my Adam's Apple square on and made me gag. Probably could have killed me if the pitcher was much faster.
