Doing a mid level U-18 Rec game today. Small baseball rubber being used (not unusual for a rec field shared by both sports). New pitcher comes out in the third and its obvious that she's doing something strange. After a couple of pitches I realize that when she pushes off she is pushing/dragging 6-8 inches to the left of the rubber. This puts her legs in a crossed pattern with both pivot and stride foot outside the smaller rubber. I talk to coach (league asks us to correct illegal pitch if we can). Coach asks if they can change to regulation size plate. I say please do. After all this happens, girl still uses strange crossing pattern but gets stride foot inside 24" length of plate. But pivot foot comes very close to being outside of the plate when ball is released.
My question: is there anything illegal about the pivot foot legally pushing/dragging to an area outside of the plate? ASA 6-3-G speaks of the stride foot coming down witin the 24" space but not the pivot foot. As I said a strange looking pitch with the pivot foot crossing behind the stride foot. I guess there could have been some degree of leaping but the drag marks went directly from the plate to an area 6 inches in front of and at the very edge of the pitching plate. I was working solo so no partner to consult with. What say you?
