If the league was such that I was not going to call IP (wreck leagues, younger pitchers, etc), I would have talked with the coach the first time I saw it (likely, after the very first warmup pitch, before the inning started).
Regardless of the level, however, I can think of no circumstance where I'm discussing an illegal pitch with the player (unless, I suppose, the pitcher was also the coach).
