If the flex bats for the DP the DP has left the game. If the DP plays defense for the flex the flex has left the game. Both can be on defense at the same time but both cannot be on offense at the same time.
The 2002 rulebook had something like "tenth player" or some other word for it. All the codes are the same now on that one.
