Had a bad spectator sitch that got worse, but turned out great thanks to a classy gentleman.
Older gentleman batter hit a line-drive over second for what everybody considered an easy stand up double (it almost made it to the fence). Right center fields and fires to second. Im watching as FU and I cant beleive the arm that he just showed. Here is where everything goes into slow-motion.
Everything I have read here and in the book is coming to my mind cause the BR isnt watching and is about to get hit. Well, you guessed it and right on his right temple. He is a step away from second when he gets hit. I call time right away because I see he is hurt. He is staggering around as everybody is rushing the field to his aid.
This is where things got sticky. Some of the opposing teams fans start laughing and making fun of 'the old man that got hit.' My partner, while the guy is being assisted off the field, looks at the crowd pokin' fun and says 'you ought to be ashamed of yourselves.' Even some of the opposing teams players tried to quiet the crowd, but it just got worse.
We got the teams in there dug-outs as the fans continued and then to everyones surprise, out from the dug-out comes the gentleman that got hit. He walks over to the fence in front of the fans and tips his hat and walks back to the dug-out. You could have heard a pin hit the sand.
Standing ovation erupts, order is re-stored, and we finish the game with no difficulty.
After the game we (me and my partner) walked over and told the gentleman that was the classiest thing we had ever seen, and it was.
