But wouldn't B2 also be the correct answer if you assumed batting out of order?
If he re-entered legaly in the 8 spot but then batted out of order AND it was not detected until after a pitch to the next batter. He would then be legalized and the next proper batter would be the batter that follows him in the batting order, the 9th spot.

Yes but that was not the situation here. It was detected AFTER a pitch.

Man, I screwed this thing up so bad I can't believe it!
I THOUGHT I read that the manger immediately protested after the SECOND pitch to the NEXT batter but it was the ORIGINAL illegal sub who hit the second pitch. Oh well, I read what I wanted to read I guess. I will certainly read the question three times in the future.

I had it right for my situations, unfortunately I was the only one who knew what my situation was! ;-(
