I officiate Basketball as a primary sport... I never thought I could do another sport after basketball season or before the season for that matter. Basketball is a very emotional sink for me with the effort that I put into it...
But with a shortage of umpires in an area I lived and only after several unsuccessful years of recruitment I finally tried softball (Not because I had any talent.. But because they only needed a warm body). They promised me that I would only have to work the bases.... My second NFHS game was behind the plate without a partner.. I was lucky though that the coaches knew me from Basektball and they were very merciful... Or maybe it was just that they never had any objection due to their constant laughter...
It works... Although I still think of myself as just a warm body used as filler... Or maybe fodder would be a better choice of words. This will be my third season in softball and I'm still working hard to understand the sport and how one can get by without a whistle. Although it is challenging to try to get it back through your mask after to spit it out to call balls and strikes.
I do have several friends though that work around the year.. Football in the Fall, Basketball in the Winter, and Softball/Baseball in the Spring and Summer... They seem to do just fine!
Good Luck!
