As a 2nd year umpire, I want to make sure I have this right. Maybe I'm confused or misinterpreted some of this discussion but I thought the rule states that if the batter is hit on the hands while swinging at a pitch and hits the ball fair or foul, the ball is dead and a strike called. If 3rd strike, the batter is out. So, when do you consider the hands part of the bat?
