Visualize this play: Player receives the ball in the post. Turns to the basket and jumps, both feet off the floor, but in mid-air realizes he is going to be blocked. Rather then release a shot then, and without the defender touching the ball, he throws the ball to the floor and begins to dribble. Violation.

Or...player received a pass out on the wing. He gets a "quick first step" and blows by the defender, but doesn't get the dribble off before his pivot foot leaves the floor. Tweet.
