Instead of threatening him with a T, maybe he could have said, "Coach, you'll have to trust me on this one. This play doesn't happen often [it's only happened to me once in 8 years]. For now, you'll have to trust that I'm right."

I think I'd say something like, "Coach, that is the rule, and I'll strongly advise you not to accuse me again of making stuff up."
