In northern VA, we do sort of the same as what JRut mentioned. We have 3 classifications (A, AA, & AAA) and we play districts, regionals, then states.
Every team plays in district tourney with the losers being through for the year. All assignments are made by our scholastic assignor. I worked a AA girls district tourney last night and I have the clock on a AAA girls doubleheader tonight. I have another district game tomorrow, and another AAA girls doubleheader clock on Friday. District tourneys end on Friday. Regional tournaments start next Tuesday (2/22) and finish on 2/26. State quarter finals start on or about 1-2 March and all state finals take place at the Siegel Center in Richmond on 12 March. There will be A girls/boys, AA girls/boys and AAA girls/boys games on the 12th. We will have games at 11, 1, 3, 5, 7, & 9. I plan to be there for all 6 games.
My association sends the Virginia High School League (VHSL) a list of 10-12 (I think) officials for consideration for state level games. The VHSL makes the assignments - coaches have absolutely no input. I believe that we have to sit out a year after going 3 years. Our officials cannot officiate a quarter final/semi final state level game with teams from the 2 regions we cover. We have guys go to the beach area and officials from central VA or southwest VA come up and do quarter finals in our neck of the woods.
