I called a foul. Immediately after I identified the offending player, he earned a technical foul. As I reported the first foul to the scorer, he informed me that it was the player's fifth foul. I then informed the coach, the timer, and the player had already gone to the bench. Next, I reported the technical foul, and I assessed an indirect technical to the coach.
First, procedurally, was I correct to notify the coach of the disqualification and start the time for the substitute before reporting the technical?
Second, after thinking about it and subsequently checking the rulebook, I believe I was wrong to assess the indirect technical, since, at the time of the technical, I had not yet informed the coach of the disqualification. Therefore, the player should not have been considered bench personnel, and it should only have been a player technical foul. Do I have it right, after the fact? It was the first and only technical on the coach. Both coaches were very respectful for the entire game, and I don't believe the call had an impact (direct or indirect) on the outcome of the game.
