By NFHS rules a fair catch doesn't have been given or a player in the area. A free kick cannot be caught in the air (by K) or it is KCI... like Snake~eyes stated before...
But the question was for NFL. Unlike NFHS, in NCAA a kicker can catch the kick. I assume NFL is the same as NCAA. In order to have KCI you have to impede the kick returner.
