In our association, each conference has a varsity assignor. Then we have a paid assignor who coordinates all the games. They meet in October with everyones availability sheet and they prioritise the games. The "Big" games will be assigned before any game involving the best verses the worst in any conference. They go through the list of games assigning officials until they are all assigned for that given night. Then we go through the list and try to match mentors with mentees for the JV games. If a mentor is calling a varsity game, we try to get the mentee to the JV game to call it. That way they can watch each other work. Then we put the rest of the sub-varsity games into the computer along with the remaining available officials and let the computer match them up for the remaining available games.

When the system breaks down and turn backs start comming in, is when the paid assignors start earning their money. If it is a varsity game, they have to track down the conference assignor and find out their pick for a replacement, then the paid assignor has to track down the replacement to see if he can accept the game. On the subvarsity level, the assignor just starts going through his list of availables and finding someone who can make it to that game.
