Much of the problem here is that many "coaches" only remember what they learned from their youthful days in baseball. Remember metal spikes? No one in the leagues I played in were dumb enough to block the base with any part of their body. The fielder should straddle the bag or stand next to the base to the side from which the throw is coming.

Only a catcher who can control their drop to use their shinguards for protection should ever think about using their legs to block a base and even then, I don't believe that is a very intelligent move for a child.
