This brings up a good point.
Obviously, as you stated, an official can make it to a State tournament with less than perfect rules knowledge.
IMO rules knowledge is very, very important...some might ask though if it is paramount?
What are some traits that make an excellent official...a State championship official?
Examples:
* Coordination
* Smooth, Fluid movements
* Ability to Communicate
* Looks, i.e. Athletic, Not overweight
* Knowledge of the game
* Experience
* Ability to get along with people
* Even tempered
* Willingness to be better
* Decent IQ
* Big Ego
OK...add some of your own...rate them in an order of importance if you wish.
Remember, I'm not saying any one of these traits standing alone will make a good official...but when you add them all up...IMO, it doesn't hurt.
