Some times even veterans get a brain fart. I say that you did the right thing but would have added a post game chat with the rookie to see what was going through his/her mind and used this situation as a positive teaching experience. If explained properly, the rookie would come out of the game with a positive attitude about officiating and a realization that he/she has a lot to learn. Besides, the rookie just might come to you for help with his/her game in the future.
