Any help is greatly appreciated.
You say your perception of plate plays was weak. Have you asked any of your partners for their viewpoints?
You may be a little harsh on yourself. No one can appreciate your mechanics more than an umpire who is actually there!

I would recommend that in general the thirdbase line extended is better for most plate plays because from what I have read 3/5 of plays at the plate are swipe tags. This gives you a better view of the tag than the firstbase line extended. When throws become off-line you have to adjust. I know this is one part of my game I am looking to improve.

I think you are right about not being too close. I would also suggest pause and react. Just like we can sometimes call pitches too quickly, we can do the same on plate plays. Give yourself time to develop the picture.

I know that some of our Top Dogs will have more to add and I'll be looking for their input. Jim Simms / NYC
