The main objections to three person basketball is:
1)money
2)retraining old officials
3)"That's not my area" excuse.
4) Not enough officials.
Here in Texas we have been working on it.
1) Change the pay scale. Have a different pay scale for 3 man than you have for 2 man. You may have to work two games to get the money you used to get for one but if that is what it takes.
2) Train. Require everyone who wants to call varsity to attend a camp over the summer that teaches three man and have all your summer league games done in three man. Get used to the covereage and mechanics in the off season so that in the season it is second nature. Let the "old guy's" know that this will extend their career. I saw one clinician tell an official at camp that we need your experience on the floor. All we are trying to do here is teach you the mechanics so you can be there when we need you.
3) Use propoer HS mechanics for the covereage. HS mechanics(vs college) has a lot of double whistles. Make sure you are calling your primary and if need be help in the secondary. Make sure as C you are getting that junk that happens at the top of the key. The coaches are expecting you to clean up the game when you have three eyes on it.
4) Get the word out. We are moving the three man officiating and we need new blood to help us do it. The more we can have in the chapter the better off we will be. Let the rookies know that that are wanted and appreciated and the ones that work hard will get varsity games this year.
