A lefty can pick up his right foot, step towards 3b and throw there, without releasing his pivot foot. A righty can pick up his left foot, step towards 1b and throw there, without releasing his pivot foot. The pitcher in either case must step ahead of the throw, not a snap throw followed by a step.
