The timeout in this case cannot be granted.
A team must have both team control and player control in order to be granted a time-out. The player requesting the time-out does not need to have control, but one of his teammates does.
It's actually "in control or *at the disposal of* a player of his/her team."
I mention this because one coach argued I couldn't grant a TO to the other team when they (the other team) was shooting a free-throw since there was no player control.
