Well, this isn't something I made up myself. I've been told this by USLacrosse clinicians in two different districts.
The mechanics manual very clearly says that you're not required to demonstrate it to the coaches, and I think it makes a lot of sense to NOT demonstrate it and NOT let them test it themselves. We've made our judgment that it's illegal, and there's nothing to be gained by a coach saying "Well, it looks close enough to ME!" Furthermore, once we leave it on the table there's no guarantee that the coach hasn't messed with it to change what we flagged it for.
But the bottom line is that the coach asking to check the stick himself is questioning your call and hence you're competence and/or integrity.
BTW, I've NEVER had to throw the flag for USC for them taking the stick off the table, because I make it clear when I bring it over what the procedure is.
