I think there has been some great advice about being an umpire. I would like to add that it is important to know everything the ref has to know. It will make the game go faster and smoothier if you have every answer for the ref. You need to know things like if the ball was out of bounds, was the clock running before the last play, all sorts of little details make things go smooth. Before I worked as a ref I had know idea what they had to keep track of back there, and little things can help them. You need to communicate with everyone and think of yourself as the refs little servant.
