My hero.
Maybe I'm crazy. Tillman is a huge hero to me. All those that have served are huge heroes. However, there was something special about Tillman. I don't know if it makes him better than the others, that is not my point.
I do know that some join the military because they have very few options in life. These people serve to the best of their abilities and are everyday heroes that fought (and some died) fighting for our causes.
Pat Tillman turned down a huge contract to stay in Sun Devil Stadium and play with the Cardinals, He lived his life on principles and backed it up 100% with action. When he felt a call to duty, he gave away what is so valued in our society, fame and fortune. He was a football player because he was a competitor. He was a soldier because he was an American. He wanted nothing in return. He was only giving to his country.
For me, this is what separates him. It does not make his life better or more valuable than any other soldier's. And if it made me terribly sad (which it did) when he passed and reminded me how horrible it was that so many others lost their lives, then good. I needed the reminder.
