When a batter hits a ball into themselves, I would think it is a foul ball. I call "FOUL BALL" as soon as the contact is made. If it somehow hits the batter as he/she is running to first then I call "DEAD BALL" and return all runners to where they were when it happened.

If the batted ball hits the runner while moving towards 1st base they are called out. I'm not sure I have ever seen that happen. A batted ball hit by a runner is out unless, they are behind the fielder that is from the National Federation of High school Softball rule book. But if it hit the bater while in the batters box it is a dead ball
