Some refs don't know this rule
I had this happen last year, clock started on rim. Ball hit floor and went out to the 3 point line, we rebounded and made the three, only to be told time had expired. Ref said ball is live when it hits the rim (another false understanding of the rules, but hey, what can you do?), so therefore the clock starts when it hits the rim.
