Referee dies during Division III basketball game
January 18, 2004
WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) -- College basketball referee Tony Herndon collapsed while officiating a Division III game and later died.
The 43-year-old Herndon had an apparent heart attack about six minutes into the second half of a game between North Carolina Wesleyan and Shenandoah on Saturday night.
He collapsed after making an out-of-bounds call. While athletic trainers and medical staff assisted Herndon, players on both teams huddled in prayer at their benches. Herndon was then taken to Winchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said Sunday.
