95% of the time when we IAABO officials use this option it’s either when the inbounds is on the endline, most often opposite the table, or in the last seconds of a period, especially in a close game.
In all of these cases we are instructed (locally) to inform the timer to watch the trail official.
Most IAABO observers are aware of this option and would actually disapprove if the option is not used in such circumstances, thus implying some type of mandate.
What does the NFHS say about such?
