My question is how many steps is it when a player does a lay-up??
I've been calling it when they take 3.. Is that right or not??
Please let me know..

Three steps is definitely a travel. A player called for travelling on a layup will usually complain I only took 2 steps but even this is travelling if it is 2 complete strides. Really what you are allowed is 1 and a half.

These are the mechanics of a normal layup

Righthand
Player picks up ball when right foot strikes the ground then contacts floor with left foot and then lifts right foot and jumps and does not touch floor with right foot before shot is released.

Lefthand
Player picks up ball when left foot strikes ground. I see many players attempt lefthand layup using Righthand style.
