NFHS Technical Foul History
Before the mid-1980s a technical foul penalty was one free throw (plus the ball).
During the 1986–87 season the NFHS changed the penalty to two free throws (plus the ball).
This was done to increase deterrence for unsportsmanlike behavior, align penalties more consistently across foul types, and improve game control for officials.
Since then, all technical fouls (player, coach, bench, team, administrative) have been two free throws and the ball, and that has remained consistent through today.
