While jewelry obviously is not considered "equipment", the umpire could ask a player to remove something like large hoop earrings.
If I judge something to be dangerous jewelry or equipment, I prefer to say they "can not play" with it on. Saying "take it off" can have a wrong implication and you might be responsible if they or the item is damaged while removing it. The same goes for illegal equipment.
