Rule 8, Section 9 has been extensively reworked in this year’s USA Softball Rules Book.

Adult SP. The home team has 11 players present and 10 are in the lineup with 1 substitute. In the fifth inning, B1 reaches bases and requests a CR. The coach decides to use the substitute as the CR, who has not yet appeared in the game.

The CR scores early in the half-inning. Several runs score and the inning is still progressing when the coach wants to insert his substitute into the B9 slot in the order.

The defense protests, correctly pointing out that S1 was previously utilized as the CR earlier in the half-inning.
