Nice post Mick
We play in a middle school select league. The games tend to run late this year because we play running clock except clock stops on all foul calls (need Mick's foul limits here). Long games cut into our warmup time when we get near the end of the day and the gym supervisor is ready to leave (we're talking 2-3 minutes max). We have great athletes, but the first quarter looks awful when they haven't touched the ball.
Had the 6:00 game this weekend. Since gyms have only one book, we have to wait until first game is over to put our team in (no 10 minute rule here!). We start warming up and the scorer's table calls me over and asks me to fill out the book. I give it to our team manager who dutifully fills it out and gives it to the other coach. I go over to talk to him while his girls are in layup lines. He makes the comment that he is having trouble rememebering the girls names. I see his daughter in one of the lines and say "I bet you don't have trouble with #XX." He says "some days I have trouble with her name as well." The table is asking for the book and saying "once it's ready we can start." I look at a layup line complete with numbers and last names on uniforms (pretty simple to get right), realize what he has done for us, and told him "I think my manager missed a player, please have him check the book one last time when you are done." We got our warm-up time! Oh, and I guess I was wrong about that missing player, but you can never be too careful!
