It is just that - Insurance.
Insurance for which an IC does not pay premiums.

That said, I do know there that in some states law makers are trying to figure a way to pay to IC's and employees who's employer is exempt from UI payments (more precisely Unemployment Insurance Premiums.)
I think that's the point I was making.

EDIT: I have now read where the act extends UI benefits to some who would otherwise be ineligible including self-employed and ICs. Don't know exactly how it works (and my guess is that not many do; it's too early).

I did read that (some?) ICs might be eligible for the "small business loan guarantee / forgiveness program" (I forget the exact name) -- but I'm not sure how that would work for us.
