MLB announced this morning that Chad Whitson (#62) had been promoted to a permanent position on MLB staff replacing the retiring Mike DiMuro (#16).

Chad graduated from Wendelstedt's School in 2005 and immediately started his march to the Big Leagues. Until his permanent assign to MLB he had been on the IL staff for a number of years. He called his first MLB Spring Games in 2012 and his first MLB games in 2014. Chad also has the distinction of being the first umpire to have his call overturned under the Rules Changes for 2014 in the Mariners-Angels game on March 11, 2014.

I had the distinct pleasure of having Chad as a student in my Fall 1999 OhioHSAA Basketball Officiating Class while he was a freshmen at Bowling Green State University. He still officiates boys'/girls' H.S. basketball in Ohio as well as women's Div. III college basketball. His father is still officiating women's college basketball himself.
