Bill,
You need to provide a bit more information. In USA Softball, if a runner is hit with a batted ball, first determine if it was intentional. If so, the runner is out.
If it is not intentional (which is mostly the case), look to see the closest defensive player. If the closest defensive player is in front of the base, then the ball remains live. If the closest defensive player is behind the base, then the ball is dead, BR is placed on first, and runner advance only if forced.
