How would Independent Contractor vs Employee status affect how many officials work varsity games?
AFAIK, officials who want to work 3-person varsity can join 3-person associations and conferences if they are IC's, but they have to accept whatever PIAA (or another state governing body) or the association tells them if they are employees? If they are employees, PIAA, the association, etc. would have to pay them benefits and withhold income in taxes, and follow anti-discrimination statues, so I don't know if associations are willing to do that, even if they want to exert the control over officials that employers currently have over their employees.
