Does anybody else use the player's body position in judging whether the following contact was legal?

Yes. I use the player's position to help with my judgment in making the call/noncall. You're at where I was when I first started as a complete
VB neophyte. I've improved, but it's a work in progress. Keep working, and seeing plays. The confidence will come.
