I never really understood why this was not something that was correctable... or fixable to avoid being part of correctable errors. It is something where the right action is not correct by rule. Yes, we want to avoid slippery slope scenarios with regards to other rules but there certainly could be a fix for this specific situation. It is also a case where everyone would agree with you if you stopped play quickly and gave the ball to the "correct" team.
Follow the rules however, and just admit the mistake. Keep the game moving.
