I’ve been having a discussion with a friend about how long you must keep a opponent shoulders pined to the mat before the official declares him pined . We both wrestled in H.S. and I believe it was free-style .

how long must it be for a pin?

The official ruling in accordence with the N.F.H.S. is 1.5 seconds. Even though some officials are faster and some extremly slow. 1.5 seconds is the official ruling.

If you wrestled for your high school team, then it was not freestyle, it was collegiate. For freestyle matches, there is a "touch-pin" rule. If your shoulder blades touch the mat, then that's it. However, for collegiate, the rule is 1.5 seconds.

Thank you both for your response. And it may very well be so that it was collegiate stile. But might it have been different back in the mid 60’s in So.Cal ? As I remember it, it was just a touching of the shoulders to get a pin.
Being a football official I know the rules for that sport have changed quite a bit since I played. But then again it may very well be my memory that has failed 8^)

BTW ….It only took two years for my post to be answered LOL

time until pin

Gentleman,

In high school wrestling a pin is when "Any part of the shoulders or both scapulas of either wrestler are in contact with the mat for two seconds" per the National Federation of State High Schools Assoc.Rule book, Rule 5-2-7
Not 1.5 sec.

Well maybe the mechanic is to count to 1.5 and by the time you slam its 2.0 ;^)

BTW….thanks coach for the rule reference, now if I can just find that dumb-a$$ who told me its three seconds "just like in da TV rasselling" I'll collect that pitcher of fermented grain we bet LOL.

James - FILA one second; NCAA one second, NFHS two seconds.
The mechanic is to count 1 thousand 1, 1 thousand 2. On the first count you have the FILA and NCAA fall, on the second count you have the High School fall.
