FIVB: New Net Touch Rule Approved

New net touch rule approved | FIVB - Press release

FIVB released several rule changes. Most are minor and apply specifically to FIVB Competitions (free zone dimensions, ads on nets, staff restrictions, etc.). However, the one I imagine we'll see in the US soon is an altered net violation rule.

Quote:

Rule 11.3 (Volleyball and Beach Volleyball)
Contact with the net by a player between the antennae, during the action of playing the ball, is a fault.
This sounds very similar to the current NCAA rule. I suppose we'll have to wait some time to see their interpretations of "playing the ball" to determine how similar it actually is.

Regardless, I assume this will enter the USAV rulebook next year. What does everybody think about the elimination of the "top tape only" net rule?

First of all, it was never "top tape only." That was just the most common one, and people assumed that was the only way you could have a net violation called. Totally untrue.

Secondly, I think it just adds more judgment and subjectivity, but I'll call it how I'm instructed to call it, just like in any other rule set.
