Match situation

Was the R2 on a varsity match last night that was a sweep.First 2 sets were uneventful but the 3rd got pretty loud once home school's football players came in.Toward the end of the match (somewhere in the area of 21-18) V coach asked how many timeouts she had left.Due to the crowd noise all I heard her say was timeout and granted request-and not her request for information. When I realized she didn't want the TO what were my options? Can I go inadvertent whistle and just explain to the other coach and my partner what happened?

Absolutely. You can cancel the time out and say it was inadvertent, because it was. You're allowed to make mistakes, even at your own expense. ;)

Thanks Antonio,
I put in my match notes that in a case like I need to verbally confirm what the coach is asking. How do you approach the coach and confirm in that case? Most of my R2's last year were in gym's so quiet you could hear a pin drop.I caught a couple of net violations too-one I led with and one we both got at the same time.

Just ask the coach if they were asking for a time out, especially if the environment is loud.

I'm an advocate of the FIVB technique (minus the technical aspect). Coaches are required to give the time out signal to indicate they want one. That alleviates the "too loud" aspect.

Until then, just tell the coach it's hard to hear and clarify that they want one before granting it.

If it is a request for their 3rd time out, could you ask; "Coach, did you say sideout, because you don't have any timeouts?"....that's how I handle that.:D
