legal uniform number?

rule 4-2-4-b says the number: not more than 2 digits, 00, 0 - 99

So, is 01, 02, 03....etc legal?

I say no based on how the rule is written.

Just curious as to what part of the rule you think makes those numbers illegal?

0-99. which is not 01-99, 01-09 and 10-99, etc.

00 is legal. 0 is legal. Numbers less than 10 that are single digits with the exception of 0 (00) can't have a 0 preceding it.

That's how I'd read it, and since they usually (but not always) follow NCAA guidance, that's how the NCAA interprets it, so that's how I would as well.

But I'd ask your state association for a final ruling.

That's how I read it too.

And the follow on stump-er......

In that case 00 and 0 are two different numbers and can be on the same roster?

(If not then 01 is a legal number.)

I got an oral 'no' from my state interpreter....but that was an arbitrary answer not supported by any logic or rule. "Just because I said so".

Why don't we get rid of 00?

Has anyone asked their state rules interpreter about this? I have asked but have not received a reply yet. I just ran across a team that half of the starters had zero's preceding their number....02, 05, 09.
GEE!

Interestingly, the answer does not seem to be consistent, but I am good with it.

From Becky Oakes:

I was on a message board and we were discussing legal numbers in High School volleyball. Page 93 lists the legal numbers, 00, 0, 1, 2, ...etc and how to indicate them with hand signals.

Since it does not list 01, 02..etc, and they do not specify how to indicate 01 with hand signals I assume that they are illegal and these players would not be allowed to enter the game. The leading zero is a different number than 1, 2......

Also, since 00 and 0 are both listed, I would assume that 00 and 0 are different numbers and both can play since we do have hand signals to designate the players.

Are these correct assumptions of NFHS rules.

01 and 1 are considered the same number and signal as 1. Both 1 and 01 can’t be in the same set. Rule book counts 00 and 0 as different numbers.
Becky
